Our Story

How long have you been making cookies?

Since 1984.

Kevin:  Man...or myth?

Who is Kevin?  Well, Virginia, there really WAS a Kevin.  Kevin founded Kevin's Cookies in 1984.  As he was finishing up law school, he decided that being an attorney was not his heart's desire.  He began playing around with some recipes in the kitchen of an iconic cookie shop near the SMU campus in Dallas and in November of 1984, opened Kevin's Cookies & Cream in downtown Austin.  In 1997 he sold the business to Trey, his trusty sidekick.

Trey, how did you get your start?

Trey, in his first semester of college, answered an ad in The Daily Texas, the student newspaper of The University of Texas, in October of 1989.  He & Kevin hit it off, and Kevin hired Trey to be a counter clerk.  The following semester Kevin taught Trey his coveted cookie recipes.  By the beginning of Trey's 2nd year at the U. of Texas, Trey was on the 4:30 AM baking shift, working until noon and then going to classes in the afternoon.  Kevin, who had another location at the time, allowed Trey to learn the day to day operation of the business on the fly, and Trey managed the shop for the next three years.  Over the next four years, Kevin got tired of being Kevin and decided he was ready to leave the cookie business to his indentured servant, Trey.  And so, in February 1997, he sold the business (now called Kevin's Cookies & Deli) to Trey.

Where do you find your recipes?

Many of our cookie and muffin recipes are the same ones created by Kevin all those years ago.  However, we have added quite a few new recipes over the years, always with the same premise of using the best ingredients, making small batches, and making sure every cookie we make is worthy of the title, Best Cookies of the Planet.

Are you active in the community?

At Kevin's we believe it is important to give back.  Our favorites usually have to do with kids -- the Austin Children's Museum, Dell Children's Hospital, the Austin Jaycees and Travis County Sheriff's Posse, to name a few.  After all, cookies and kids go together, right?  Another initiative near and dear to us is Cookies for the Troops -- sending cookies at Christmas to our soldiers deployed around the world.  In December 2007 we sent 285 dozen cookies to soldiers deployed in the Middle East.  We took 2008 off, but are back on track for Christmas 2009.  Want more info?  E-mail trey@kevinscookies.com and ask to subscribe to our e-newsletter, and we'll keep you updated!

How do I contact you for a donation?

Easy squeezy!  E-mail trey@kevinscookies.com and outline your request, your organization and your event.  Please understand that we are inundated with requests, so we can't say yes to everybody!  However, as long as we are in business, we want to do as much as we can for as many people as we can!

Our Cookies

What are you cookies made of?

Sugar, spice and everything nice!  OK, here's a little-known secret about cookies.  It's not that we have a super-secret recipe with super-secret ingredients (although we're not gonna give you the recipes)...The secret is that we use the BEST ingredients!  Real butter.  Not margarine and not, heaven forbid, shortening; real vanilla bourbon; Guittard chocolate, bought by the pallet-load straight from the chocolate factory

What makes Kevin's Cookies so delicious?

Well, see our answer to the previous question, for starters.  But here are some other reasons they are so delicious:  We make them fresh.  We make them in small batches and we scoop each cookie by hand so that we inspect every single cookie we make.  That means if it looks funny, we don't sell it.  If it doesn't have enough chocolate chips, we don't sell it.  If we undercook it, we don't sell it.  If we overcook it, guess what?  We don't sell it.

Where do you deliver to?

We deliver our  gourmet cookies and cookie gifts pretty much everywhere, except maybe Antarctica.  Although located in Austin, TX, we seal and ship our cookies everywhere.  For more info about cookie delivery, see About Kevin's Cookie Delivery

What's up with this Guittard chocolate?

Guittard Chocolate is the oldest family-owned and operated chocolate company in the U.S.  We like that.  Interestingly, they are located in close proximity to the ever-popular Ghirardelli Chocolate, in San Francisco.  Is it better?  We think so.  We buy all of our chips -- chocolate, white chocolate, butterscotch and cappuccino -- from the fine folks at Guittard.  We use their Sweet Ground Chocolate (an amazing Guittard innovation) in our double chocolate and triple chocolate almond cookies.

Are your cookies soft-baked or crunchy?

Our cookies are cooked in convection ovens at just the right temperature for just the right amount of time to make them the perfect blend of both with a crisp outside and a soft inside.  Confused?  Truth is, we don't know how to explain it either.  The outside offers just a tiny bit of resistance as you bite into the soft, decadent goodness that lies within.  Just try 'em!  You'll see what we mean!

Has anyone ever eaten their own body weight in cookies?

Yes.  His name is Mike Bailey and he lives in Georgia.

What's the most popular cookie flavor?

Our most popular cookie, hands down is the semi-sweet chocolate chip.  Our "Big Three" are semi-sweet, white chocolate macadamia and oatmeal raisin.  The Big Three represent 60% of our cookie sales.  Our other 12 flavors make up the rest.

What's the BEST cookie flavor?

Wars have been started over less inflammatory issues.  Jennifer (Trey's wife), says, "Triple Chocolate Almond, of course... dipped in white chocolate!".  Trey's favorite is White Chocolate Macadamia, or maybe Milk Chocolate Pecan.  Our single most popular cookie is the Semi-Sweet Chocoalte Chip.  We encourage you to try ALL the flavors and discover your favorite.  Then tell us what it is!

What kind of ingredients do you use?

Short answer:  The BEST!  We use real butter (Wisconsin Grade AA), eggs, Imperial sugar, Van Tones vanilla bourbon and Guittard Chocolate.  We believe that you can taste the difference between making cookies on the cheap and making them with premium ingredients.  Here's what we DON'T put in our ingredients:  NO PRESERVATIVES.

Do you provide personalized cookies?

Yes!  Our cookie cakes are a very popular item.  Order a birthday cookie cake, or for any other occasion.  We will hand-form the cookie in the flavor that you choose, then write your message on the cookie.  Our Valentine's cookie cakes (heart-shaped with red icing) are very popular cookies for Austin delivery.  Not in Austin?  We can ship gourmet cookie baskets and cookie gift boxes anywhere!  While the cookies themselves aren't personalized, we will ad your personal message to a card that we will include with your cookie gift.

How do you make sure the cookies stay fresh?

Easy.  We seal up the cookies that we are shipping, so that they arrive to you in airtight bags.  This slows down the "aging process" of our cookies, and ensures that you get a yummy cookie, whether you are in San Antonio or San Diego.  If you are in Austin it's even better, because we are delivering cookies to you that we made today!

Do you have nutritional information available?

Our cookies are made from all-natural ingredients like butter, eggs, sugar and chocolate.  Nothing processed.  They produce feelings of goodwill and happiness.  So, while they may not be classified as "healthy food", we do believe they are good for you!  OK, seriously, yes we can provide you with nutritional info on the cookies.  E-mail info@kevinscookies.com and let us know which cookies you'd like information about and we'll send it to you.

I have allergies. Is there anything I can eat?

We do have a line of gluten-free cookies, made with gluten-free flour blends.  All of our other ingredients are certified gluten-free as well, and the cookies are produced in an environment free of cross-contamination.  We do use nuts (peanuts, pecans, walnuts, almonds & macadamias), so unfortunately we do not have a nut-free environment.  We're working on that!

Do your cookies contain nuts?

Many of our cookies do, as we answered above.  At this time we do not have a nut-free production facility.

How long does it take the cookies to get there?

If we are delivering cookies in Austin, we can get them there the same business day, if ordered before noon CST.  Otherwise, we'll deliver the next business day, unless you specify a future delivery date.  Brownies usually require 24 hours' notice -- it takes a little more time to get brownies made and ready.  If we are shipping cookies out of Austin, we will send them UPS Ground or Priority Mail, and they will generally take 2-4 busniess days, depending on where they are going.  Cookies sent overseas will generally take 7-8 business days.  If they are ordered before noon CST, we will ship them the same business day they are ordered (unless there are brownies in the order).  Otherwise they will go out the next business day, unless a future delivery date is specified by you.

Do you ship your cookie cakes?

Unfortunately our cookie cakes are only delivered in Austin, Kyle & San Marcos.  We deliver our cookie cakes personally or by a local courier service, because they just wouldn't hold up to the rigors of shipping.  The icing would smear and they would get broken.

Why do you offer free shipping?

We periodically run shipping specials on the website, which include free delivery in the Austin area and $5 shipping everywhere else.  It's just a cheap marketing gimmick to get your attention and entice you to order cookies right now.  Quite simply, we are willing to pay a few bucks out of pocket to cover the shipping if we can get you to order some cookies.  Call it marketing genius, or call it desperation.  Just take advantage of these special offers when they come along!
